Olivia Arthur x Holden

A celebration of dynamism, modernity, and the harmony
between performance and design.

DISCOVER THE PROJECT

Olivia Arthur on the Project “Perpetual Motion”

Olivia Arthur, former President of Magnum Photos and a long-time documentary photographer, has spent her career capturing human stories with depth and authenticity.

Asked to create an artistic series around the Holden collection, I turned to my long- time collaborator Kaduri Elyashar and we decided to make images that explore the dynamics of movement. Holden makes ski and outerwear and the idea was to capture the feeling of freedom and energy that come with being outdoors and up on the mountain. In our images, the clothes are full of air and the people are flying. We decided to work with dancers to capture this energy but also to show something graceful as their limbs merge with the fabrics and the colours splash around. I worked with a 100-year-old wooden box camera and used slow exposures to capture the movements and energy, freezing the motion at times with a splash of flash. The result is ghostly but also full of power and this feeling of endless motion. This project is an exploration of movement, freedom, and the human form in motion. Through my lens, I aimed to capture the intersection of performance and everyday life, where the boundaries between sport, art, and personal expression dissolve. The subjects in these images are not just wearing garments—they are inhabiting them, moving with them, testing their flexibility, resilience, and grace. Each shot is a study of the way fabric and body interact, how light and shadow play across surfaces, and how the smallest gestures can tell the biggest stories. With a focus on raw energy and authenticity, this series brings together individuals who embody the spirit of motion. The frames are intentionally unpolished, allowing for the spontaneity of real movement to shine through. I wanted to go beyond traditional fashion photography and instead create a visual narrative that feels alive —where the viewer can almost hear the breath, feel the wind, and step into the frame themselves.

Jane Warner, Holden Creative Director, on the Project:

At Holden, we have always believed in designing for movement—garments that function seamlessly in an active lifestyle while maintaining a refined, artistic sensibility. This project with Olivia Arthur perfectly aligns with our brand philosophy: a celebration of dynamism, modernity, and the harmony between performance and design.

Olivia’s unique ability to capture both the intensity and elegance of movement brings our vision to life. Her approach resonates deeply with Holden’s core values—merging technical innovation with creative expression. The raw energy in these images reflects the real-world versatility of our collections, where high-performance meets contemporary aesthetics. From urban streets to untamed landscapes, Holden is about embracing movement in all its forms, and this shoot encapsulates that essence beautifully.

Through Olivia’s lens, we see not just clothing, but an ethos—a way of living that is fluid, expressive and always in motion.
